Seminar on "The God Particle: Computing its Footprints in an Atom"
Thursday, 18 October 2012,  3:00 -  4:30
 Hits : 3359

There has been great excitement in the past few months about the possible discovery of the

God particle known to physicists as the Higgs boson. If the existence of this particle can be

unambiguously confirmed then it would be one of the greatest discoveries in the history of

science.

The Standard Model of particle physics predicts a Higgs boson and some of its its

extensions predict more particles of the same kind but with different masses. The focus of

the talk will be on a new kind of interaction between the nucleus of an atom and the

electrons that could be mediated by a beyond the Standard Model Higgs Boson. The

computation of the strength of this interaction by a high performance computing techniques

and its implications will be described.

Location Conference Hall, C-MMACS New Bldg.
Contact Krishna Mohan
Speaker: Bhanu Pratap Das, Director (Also: Professor, Non Accelerator Particle Physics Group), Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore
